Maybe some plaforms still need Java 4 
It's good to be flexible, but if it requires to make workarounds/hacks and you can't use new features of Java 7, then.. I think it is sufficient to have Openfire 3.8.2 with Java5/6 and new versions with only 7. It's like still supporting IE6 or .NET 1/2. Things has to go away at some point. We can do a poll (again), but probably people really needing old java won't vote
